Lime Pointing
Using lime mortar instead of cement mortar for pointing stone masonry and brickwork is a wise choice. Lime is a softer material which allows moisture to move through the joints. This moisture movement or “Breathability” reduces moisture in the buildings fabric, the likelihood of issues such as damp and the appearance of soluble salts that could appear on stone or brickwork.
Lime Harling
Lime Harling is a thrown, or cast on finish consisting of lime and coarse aggregate mortar. It usually has a rough-textured surface. It is the most common type of traditional surface finish found in Scotland on masonry buildings.
Lime Plastering
Lime Plaster is a traditional mortar used to cover the surface of internal walls and ceilings, usually applied in 3 coats but it is common to find 2 coats or even single coat work in early structures.
Stone Mortar Repairs
Lithomix lime mortar stone repairs is a method we would recommend where only surface damage is evident but the stone still has structural integrity. This is a specially formulated mortar based on Natural Hydraulic Lime and Aggregates which will be colour matched to the damaged stone.
Stone Carving
Stone Cleaning
Doff cleaning is a gentle process of cleaning stone using steam. Pressure and temperature are kept high at the nozzle end and this is adjusted during cleaning. Generally, a temperature of 150 degrees Celsius will provide the needed results, but it is adjusted to suit an array of stonework substances during the cleaning process.
Stone Replacements & Indents
Normally the only reason stone should be replaced is because it has failed, compromising structural integrity of the building. The cause of failure should be investigated as there could be many factors such as weather erosion, salt damage, location or even just bad maintenance and poor repairs in the past such as impervious cement pointing.
A Repair / Partial Indent can be considered when it’s an isolated area of damage/failure as to keep as much historic fabric as possible retaining the building original material and records.
